Course Overview

This comprehensive half day programme is designed to cover all of the legal requirements for the safe use and mounting of abrasive wheels.


The provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (Regulation 9) requires that any person using a piece of work equipment that presents a significant risk to the user must be trained and that the training covers not only the use but also any hazards arising from the use and the precautions to be observed.


This course looks at the most up-to-date legislation, wheel selection, wheel storage, wheel types and markings and also includes practical demonstrations on procedures to be followed when mounting abrasive wheels.

Course Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the hazards arising from the use of abrasive wheels

  • Identify the medthods of marking abrasive wheels as to type and speed

  • List the methods of storage, handling and transportation of abrasive wheels

  • Show the methods for testing and inspecting wheels for damage

  • Demonstrate the correct method of mounting an abrasive wheel including a knowledge of the function of the components

  • Show the method of dressing a wheel

  • Adjust the rest correctly

  • List the requirements of the regulations

  • Understand the risks associated with power tools
